Now back at University.

Back to things and we have been set the project- Food I decided to research Café culture, performance with food and weird cults.

In the same day we went to the Cornerhouse, to the Bloomberg new contemporaries exhibition, a few pieces were good some bad, some ugly, some trying to break taboo's, Like Paul Knight, on first glimpse, you think thats been done before, Andy Warhol, used to film that in his factory etc etc, but then you see the titles, saying perhaps how long his relationships have been with these people, which is humourous, He says there about sex and the human relationship, I like that they don't look beautiful that you almost feel embarrased when looking at the photographs, and that it looks like the same guy with three different people in long term relationships, one being with a man, so hes experimenting I doubt he's the performer, The reason I find it funny is that there like memories or he got bored with women maybe, not sure..

Was that the best relationship because hes counting the days.

I liked Sam Burford's work which was basically embraseing materials, shape and form, trying to be very simple, or mysterious. In the programme he says "I really can't think of anything to say that would support the work adequately. It is what it is". Either mysterious pretentious or lazy, but I liked the work so.... I shouldn't judge really.

Neoset Intense Black

The work that either hypnotised me; or stole the show for me was probably Dean Kissick "Just a Quiet Peaceful Dance for the Things we'll never have" It started slowly and swelled with a dub-step soundtrack that sped up and so did the images, full of subliminal messages, showing art work though out the ages in a slide show iconic images, and recent things afew turner prize pieces and the Foals Album art some architecture, I say hypnotized because you felt like you were falling and couldn't leave the room, and felt exhausted was like a rave in the tate modern.

Hello again,

I have been back In Manchester for a month and I'm wrapped up in Free For Arts Festivities, I have performed at the PR launch at Common to great appraisal, and performed at Matt and Phreds, doing a cover of Portishead, on the Ukulele, and a song which was basically me applying to Matt and Phreds, as I spent money on a harp, so need a job really.

I'm doing a toy instrument orchestra on Thursday at Gesampt, with help from all sorts of folk, and I'm playing the closing party on Friday at Centro, doing all this is grand, and got OXJAM interested, so I have some gigs lined up with them.

I was supposed to be living in a dilapidated palace on whitworth park, but the landlord, change his mind about leasing his house, so I'm now living in a different huge place nearer fallowfield, and I'm like cinderella in the attic; I often forget I'm not living in whitworth park so got off the bus early and thought why not soak up some culture and escape the freshers.

I went to the Whitworth a while back to see all the print work and the new exhibitions, some great work a piece that made me want to paint again was..... Micheal Porter he usually does all his work based upon a wood near him in Derbyshire, and its so textured, he has unique was of controlling materials to invent new textures, that from far away portray a dark wilderness, up close there like your looking in the undergrowth, pretty incredible.

All the prints were lovely, and graphics I really liked how dynamic George Bellows work was .

The exhibition which shone for me was, Roberta Breitmore a performance archive, by The artist Lynn Hershman. What I found amazing was the complete histories the evidence, how this new alter ego could have been a real person, I thought how there were aspects of photography, and letters, could have just been a photography project, but the artist being clever making us consider the idea that she was living  new life was ammusing thought provoking and I guess quite troubling, I like the dark humour that it contained but I presume it disturbed all sorts of people.

ROBERTA BREITMORE
Performance in real life, using real materials, experience and real time
San Francisco, San Diego, Italy.

"Besides bending reality to create ROBERTA BREITMORE, Hershman has more significantly demolished the barriers separating theater, literature, painting, photography and conceptualism. This collage technique is not unlike filmmaker Robert Altman's multiple character/multiple viewpoint treatment in nashville. Hershman rents a room, uses the mails and classified ads as they are ordinarily used. This creative demolition may be the most promising movement in the arts today"
Robert Atkins, Bay Guardian, October 13, 1978

Forms of Documentation: artifacts, diaries, surveillance photos, ads, handwriting analysis, credit, letters, psychiatric reports.
ROBERTA BREITMORE was, for 9 years a private performance of a simulated person. In an era or alternatives, she became an objectified alternative personality. Roberta's first live action was to place an ad in a local newspaper advertising for a roommate. People who answered the ad became participants in her adventure . As she became part of their reality, they became part of her fiction.

How to connect all my LP ideas.

Long players, A film playing of a record, with a live performance of human record player, basically Making live music out of manipulating found things, using my amp guitar some other things, to add to the record thats playing either by over dubbing new tracks, this will be filmed and shown, Il use the room cover the floor in old records, and the viewer will be a participant. I've wanted to do a performance aspect, the Tom Waits idea, maybe a little to complex, but I shall use elements in my final show, which I've spoken about, I think if I do something Live it connects to re-using LPS quite well, not throwing away whats been used, but recycling it.

So much to do so little time.

Organisation, is my downfall, I'm quite ambitious so have said I shall do so many things, and have only done parts of them, lots of experimentation, but nothing finished, The strongest ones have stayed in my mind, just need to work I'm going to be a busy busy bee, this pile of information needs sorted, as its quite full of false starts and areas that I haven't been to indepth about, its very vague, and theres alot of ranting, so its going to be a task to wrestle with, Long nights.

Why I believe there's Beauty in chaos.

Alot of my work, has involved recycleing, I'm making music with old things, like making percusion tracks, with records., A self playing harp, by putting desk fans near the strings, and the vibration makes them play, each note it plays shall relate to a colour and a film will play filling the whole of say the Link Gallery.

The links between artists such as Tom Waits, and Christian Marclay, is how they're both so inventive, today I thought of a great invention. (I'm always late and don't know when things are so how about an alarm clock thats also a diary so when its monday at 8am it says "Its monday at 8am you have a meeting with Jones at 10am", could get the computer to record what you type in your diary combine the two, im gonnna make a fortune).

When I said about my projects like making new music from recycled things, the thing people kept thinking was like "STOMP" and my initial answer was no, the only slight similarity is the bins and barrels shall be drums, but it will be melodic music, Theres a harp for petes sake, everything sounds pretty with a harp.

Awkward is going well, Sitting in cafes talking to people, then writing down looking directly at them. My beautiful friend Liz said you should go speed dating, now its not something you want to here from some one you fancy, but it would be good for my project, filming the odd bods, doing a 10minute documentary almost like hidden camera show for it.

Its Been A while.

When an Essay is needing to be done, everything else gets put on the back burner, but before I explain all my progress, I shall unravel, the nightmarish tales of why I havn't been able to write in this Journal of mine.

Well I was sick, so laid in Bed watching Dick Strawbridge and "its not easy being green" (one of my loves eco stuff). Then when got better started on my essay planning it so cleaned my room, and found a pen-one of my favourites, imagine a Parker Pen engraved as pretty as a quil, this was the biro alternative, I was so happy, then it leaked; and went everywhere, all over my desk, and all my new goodies from DSA (disabled students allowance. So Ironically whilst planning my essay it actually hindered me quite significantly, and pen leaked all over my mac, so the nice white mac went grey. Surprisingly it worked, so I did my essay and continued to watch random TV, as my essay was all about how we see the world through TV, so watching "Family Guy" was research- well.. pretty much... I have joined a church so takes up alot of my time, but its a blessing. So whilst away at church, I left my mac that was getting a bit strange.I got back to my little now clean if A little ink stained room, and mac didn't come back; he died, so I lost my essay. In this same week about 2 weeks after the ink incident, My eye went strange I couldn't see very well, so Getting on with anything seem to be a nightmare. But there is a happy ending, I got my essay re written in A day, my eye got better DSA, can provide me with a mac hopefully, and I'm feeling better and can see, if a little heart broken,- but thats a different tale about cowardness.

So I'm free from distractions as I don't have any entertainment as my Mac contained lots of fun stuff, so I have the Radio to keep me company, and books, so I'm getting project work in order again.

Last time we met, I was speaking about awkwardness, I'm still experimenting with that, and documenting it in a little collage book, that i'm editing in all the fancy adobe programs at uni so it looks professional so I can have a lovely professional looking copy, that I can possibly sell or at least show publishers. The book shall contain all the little subjects I've been survielling (is that a word), in different forms, either by collaging found imagery of photographs and little doodles, its alot more ambitious than I first Imagined, this still relates to my love of collage chaos and Tom Waits.

I chose to look and perform as Tom Waits in the film "Waiting for Waits" where I ask Tom questions as I act like him, and I shall experiment with acting like him in our final show, and by using projectors and film collage to get an almost live film and performance then that can be shown for the rest of the assessment week.

My love of chaos comes from, how my mind works. I have dyspraxia, which means I can do fancy things and extremely different things like sing and be imaginative fine, but the simple things like walking, any general normal co-ordination things motor skills are extremely weak, My friends get very annoyed by how I tend to walk in to them, I can only just ride a bike, but would never ride round here in manchester, and took me a long time to figure out shoe laces, and my memory is terrible. Teachers think I don't listen because i'm easily distracted, so I doodle because If i'm using one side of my brain, for one thing then I can listen better because I over think, yet alot of the time, my thoughts aren't co-herant when I speak so I mumble, this isn't me being down its just honest. So I guess I think to much yet don't THINK enough. I love how artists like Chritian Marclay and Rebecca Horn, using humour, music and chaos, yet make beautiful thought provoking work by making coherant ideas from, what other artists may consider waste, Like broken records or Instruments. The idea using old products and recycling them to make new work, like Tom Waits, for Tom Waits everything is an instrument "Swordfish Trombones" one of his seminal albums had a wide range of strange things creating un heard yet earthly honest sounds. I think because my mind works in strange ways, I see things in the world people wouldn't see, so when walking I may just day dream and think things on the lines of "the space, the bridge by the union makes the shape we shouldn't see the neagtive space is far more interesting than the bridge its self", and using things most people wouldn't usually think of the things people miss or would avoid like making un-avoidable awkward situations, I hate them, yet thrive on them sometimes, if its people I don't know, its fun to be a fool, like being in lifts and singing.

I love music and at the moment I'm Buying records sampling them, by lots of means, making percussion tracks from cutting and taping records together, making new instruments from the record players, similar to marclay, but hopefully more coherant, these will help me. there going to be a backing band for me singing and playing the harp, Im also making inventions that can automatically play the harp. The cracks and scraps and slow hum will create an atmosphere, a juxtaposed back drop for the harp, these will create an instalation possibly, I'm still dancing around with those kind of ideas.

The records are random ones I've never seen before that I shall recycle making new covers from the original artwork, Its like a fake bands, call it Manequin maybe I don't know, its ambitious, so it will be produced whilst im back in norfolk whilst im editing this Journal.

I think thats everything, lots of experiment, but I'm going to develope and finish at least one project to a High standard, righto, I'm gonna go and write these songs for the project, can't do the records backing tracks just yet but shall do.

I never mentioned Kites.

We went to Glossop on Thursday, to celebrate the philosopher Liechtenstien, and I think I have got his name wrong there, and it was great day, Ryan and Lucy made a beautiful recycled Kite whilst me and Adj faffed with a £3 one from ALDI, then when we got back to a pub had a little performance, from Patrick who did an amazing Monolouge, and James did a soundscape with his guitar and pedals, very talented. My pals got me to do something, and got lots of kind words afterwords, did a couple of covers, but need to gig alot more write more, If I don't sleep I could do all sorts and everything, because theres potential, apparently.

Kites and how I need to get on with things.

So I've been saying i'll make this book on how to survive awkward situations make it my main focus. But all I have been doing is making to do lists and going galavanting with pals.
I visit galleries, like today went to the Subversive Spaces exhibition at The Whitworth, had lots of interesting work from really currentish film makers like Gregor Shnieder film "Kinderzimmer". Which was full but shall get along to, and all the Dali, and Magritte work, nothing really stood out to me really the Douglas Gordon piece was very interesing, and hes a huge influence so I lie, that was great was all about anxiety and hysteria, was shown in i'm not sure you'd call it his signature way, but he uses the two screens at angles with back projects so you can watch 4 screens showing different imagery, very interesting.

Anyway, so I've been having a panic recently. What is the point in contemporary art?, alot is suppose to challenge which is great its always good to learn but ifs its baffling confusing or down right pretentious, then why?, I love to make a spectacle that is suppose to amaze the audience, like performance or a illusion or a new invention I think thats why I do what I do, because hopefully one day, Il get my act in to gear and amaze.

So as soon as this essay is written Im going to make the Book, edit all this blog and concentrate whole heartily in doing the book, Im still going to attempt the Tom Waits film will probably be a performance if I show all the stages in progression like some sound art, the editing experiment, the conversation, my word I'm ambitious, at the final show Il do some acting as Tom Waits with people be really awkward in Cafes. chat to a stranger. and get a pal to film all these random experiments.

LPs

I won't make a book but will use old sleeves to make new images for my demos screen print them, collage them, got a great image here that im gonna use for the song Surgery it fits to the odd childish lyrics. The idea of buying random ones just cos you like the look of them will still continue to broaden my knowledge but need to go to lots of random shops. Just forget what people consider good and think about what I actually like. Wax on Wax Off, heres the website http://www.lpcoverlover.com/

Innocent vision.

The essay i'm currently researching for is about innocent vision the question is Can there be such a thing as “innocent vision” with out interest and intentions? which is a mind boggler.

Go to Oxfam

All the new clothes I need I shall purchase from oxfam, apart from pants socks and shoes, I started the wax on wax off project today, just buying records by album art gonna make a book with them, called To Judge an LP By its Cover... and have a colection of them, with the underlineing heading some of the worst records you'll ever witness, but with the best album art, its very strange because its such a discovery of music I would never listen to usually, and alot is pap, but im hopeing I uncover some lost gems, I think I'm researching for projects in un usual ways to get a fresh light on things, I love finding out about artists that miay be relevant or might not be at all, I have a book I bought at the cornerhouse sale, a book full of painted portraits of western and easten celebrities, famous people, people from history etc, and the artists friends, the way that the artist has painted them, has made everyone from bill gates to George Clinton to look slighty easten, its a great little book, Each person that I don't know anything about that I think would be worth looking in to I shall and then write a little blurb on the back on each picture, this could all be little research things for me so I end up being as much a fountain of knowledge as I am a fountain of nonsence at the moment.

Wax on Wax Off.

Influenced by Radio 1 Colin Murray show, buy a record you've never seen or heard before just buy it because you like the cover, completely turning the idea of don't judge a book by its cover on its head.

It will make you listen to things you wouldn't usually hear. The records I buy I will recycle the sleeve, collage my singing name or band name over it then photocopy it and screen print it on to CD sleeves, a nice little project, have it pictured in my mind what I would Like them to Look Like. Its been done before but hey, It'll be different when I do it.

Another Idea I had which is my little notebook of ideas, which is bursting of odd thoughts is to find as many Edd Butt's I can and make a Photography book of them or use there identity for secret identity in some music project maybe. Abit like the secret Identity of Burial and Banksy.

There is No sence without Nonsence.

A famous composer once said, and studied this fact, studied the absurdity of the human condition, wondered why so much in the world had to be black and white, he didn't believe this fact looked at every under lying layer, why people work, the work people do, the evils of the corperate consumerist world, his name is Alfred Brendel, a fabulous piano player, but also a thinker the culture interiewed him and his favourite subject in the world, is the nonsence in the world. This got me thinking why do I do what I do, where did it all start. Why was inclined to sing, I'm presuming church, guitar was probably to attempt to impress peers, and art was self indulgent, well was it isn't anymore. I've got some ideas for books, combining my love of poetry with illustration, my pal Ryan, is doing this maybe a combined project at some point because our work is so different, so could be interesting.

Another idea I have is i'm going to make a little humourous guide called "how to survive awkward situations" basically do How to guides on peculiar things, using clips from public safety films then collaging new ideas on top, take own photographs, possibly Il do this after my ambitious waiting for waits Tom Waits talking to Him self, thinking that could be a combination of a little performance me as Tom Waits in a waiting room, combined with old film clips not sure how il develop that in my Big Book taking screen shots as I go.

Coherant studies

I'm going to be far more coherant I'm going to concentrate on the Tom Waits project, so its him talking to him self answering his own questions, like hes talking to himself I have a vision of it inside my head, so breaking that loose will be hard work, but the end result should be very intrigueing indeed, after that Hazel had an idea im going to mull over about making a little guide to awkward situations could be a very amusing publishable book, with extracts of little, like use slides that have been used for public information films and change them, maybe combine that with making album art work later in the year.
