Fuel or Nexus

I am going to sit in a cafe for most of the day, writing in this as well as in my own book,  answering the questions which were brought up in all my recent critiques and will do all the little to do lists I have put on this. Recent news last night went to PING PONG Club a night ran by Lois and Helen, was rather splendid, met some music promoters and due to my persistance and handing them scrappy pieces of paper with my details they said they'd book me for stuff, also met a blog person, who is my friend Miriam from 2nd years pal, so hopefully he'll write me up, great magical stuff.

So here's something I found whilst stumbling upon earlier (a firefox addition which searches for random pages)

Some of these roads are so beautiful to see. But, some of them I would never like to see! They are so terrifying and dangerous!

BUCKLEY SINGS THE SMITHS PERFECTION INCARNATE!

I may have made up a word there incarnate? anyway....

I know its over.

This year could be a period drama, Morrissey puts it well, Buckley reinterpritates it Beautifully, So I sang this after handing out scrappy pieces of paper to promoters and a blog personality in the empty streets of Manchester, because its my favourite, so it was for the joyful reasons, how ever dramatic this year has been getting your heart broken, healing takes time.

Hey Edd Its Contents May Vary we havn't recieved your work

A while ago you may remember I had an enjoyable time on a canal boat, with my friends Helen and James, and other artists, we all did bits of work on the boat, I did a few very subtle performances, and filmed the goings on, they have an exhibition which Edwyn will be in, and its been covered by all the press you can imagine, its in Leeds also, so good to get out of Manchester, there will be some local artists but, some international players also, Hopefully there not all talk, they seem to know lots of people so if they come to the preview, they will witness some music I wrote whilst on the boat, Played and performed, I also have a couple of collages and a film being shown.

All the work, is connected to the time of being on the boat, how quiet and peaceful at times it was, but also the chaotic nature of it all, I just did some almost home movie style films of some happenings on the boat, like a memory of what happened. I am currently finishing them and sending them off first thing tomorrow. I wanted to put some work up I might be able to sell, as its going to be a busy event. So some drawings/collages I made on the boat will be beside the blurb and films.

The results of Boatelier will be then exhibited in Propellart as part of the Social Club 2010 finale at East Street Arts' Union 105 in Chapeltown, Leeds, previewing 6-8 18th November 2010 continuing to 9th December 2010.
The artists will also give a talk on 24th November, 5-7 pm, at Union105 as part of Weds@105 Series 2: On Collaboration and Collectivity.

So this week, I am meeting the band, I have written the music, been told off by my neighbor for being noisy, I have taken down my exhibition in The Holden Gallery which was recieved really well, everyone said great things about it, I was extremely happy with it, how all the work looked different but connected on the theme of multiple personality each piece explaining the last like the whole exhibition was a personality in its self collaged together from a mixture of found stolen and made properganda parifinalia, (I realised whilst writing my dissertation on how art is extension of ourselves how we all have multiple personalities) That I tend to make up words, the joys of dislexia it is creative, poetic in a way, a thin line between creativity, and idiocracy, is that idiosyncratic.

Anyway..... So I have another exhibition going up with different work, but still with the same theme of character and personality and upbringing, with The Propellart show in Leeds. I am working on the performance for that, I have some ambitious plans.... a film from it will be put on youtube, Be organised and do that, Showing a portfolio to Dom at Sandbar, and talking about Vaudeville,
Paradox on Friday at Islington Mill, which will be a similar performance, my friend Jemima, might be able to get her agent to see me, there which would be amazing, possibly be an actor, do some Extra work in Corrie or Emmerdale, just in the background, do some plays, I'd love to play Tom Waits in his life story oneday, I can do the voice and act like him, might need some make up to look like him, and some piano lessons.

On that note A while ago I performed in a Window, these are some photos from that. was part of Free for Arts Festival.

Do You know in these last seven weeks I have probably done more work than the whole of last year, well different work, actually feel like I'm doing stuff I love being busy. Last year was all volunteering, trying to network, Getting asked to do lacky work for organisations, that in the future, might be good contacts to have, but I realised that you need to be proactive, send emails get going, get known locally which is happening, then the press get interested then more people know what you do, promoters come knocking.... So last year was a year of Falling in Love getting Heart Broken, learning from mistakes, learning how to sing, making beautiful music, releasing my first E.P, which in hiensight, could have been a lot better. Getting spoken about in the press and by radio and things is lovely, but people don't know who you are unless you slog it day on day, and still people won't know who Edwyn Butler is unless he gigs and tours, so that is why the band is coming together again, This time last year I had a band called Mata Hari, but due to people being busy moving away etc we disbanded or evolved what ever was you look at it, my new band, will be my songs, all pretty, think heavy Arcade Fire, sing along choruses and some weird interesting stuff, really excited. I released this demo, made it in a week or two for my friends uni course work, it has potential, so one or two of the songs we will use in the band.

www.edwynbutler.com

I think last year I was finding out why I was working, but not really analysing what I was doing, doing a lot of blagging, So writing a dissertation is a good way of thinking who edwyn is, and putting some critical context behind it all, Last year I was creating characters, but really doing much with them, I did a couple of film experiments, I was all talk no action that is not the case now, I'm producing new work everyday.

Having Arty events which weren't really arty or were they the Melrose Pirate Party, an extravaganza where we transformed our house in to a pirate ship, our fireworks party also, was a collective piece of work, we all worked really hard, and got a great turn out to both events.

But I reminise to much.
Time to think of the now.

BADGES BADGES AND MORE BADGES.

I was away this weekend went to Edale on a retreat they had a craft room, and a badge machine, ended up being extremely productive, made loads gave them to my pals who were there with me. Was a great weekend, needed a couple of days in the country galavanting, having bon fires, doing quiz nights. The next week is busy busy, so I am going to collect all my work and make a portfolio, I have a meeting with sand bar to show some work there and do a performance for Vaudeville, a performance night run by Dom, who works there. It is also the cross course crit, so will show all the work I have been working on over the last 7 weeks, films collages performances, etc, I am trying to work really hard, to get some grand ideas for the year ahead, there looking good, and some of theoretical reasoning has been sound apparently, How all my recent work is connecting to my dissertation, about character, multiple personalities and identity the argument, topic, question that really Intrigues me at the moment Nature and Nurture.

The badges, are a little side project, but they look brilliant, finding images in magazines, chopping them together cropping them, In weird places, I am thinking how to display them, I love the aesthetic and shapes so maybe scan them blow them up project them, the typical badge taken to new realms or something like that.

Also next week I have a tutorial about my Dissertation, which I am currently doing, I have to answer the question fill up the word count then he can tell me how to make my essay on how we all have multiple personalities, in to a masterpiece of modern madness phsycosis.

I used to be good at this malarky. Some things I have collected in the last week or so,

Putting the Merriment in experiment.http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/w023n/

Wallace and Gromit explore the mysteries behind man's fascination with flight.
 I tried uploading but no luck for now.
A little film of me performing which has been featured in my current exhibition in The Holden Gallery Cafe from 2nd-12th November, about struggling with Identity who is the actual author of artwork, and how all art is an extension of the artist. I highlighted flaws in a humourous way, and focused on what makes me different to Edwyn, some work is obviously about Edwyn, others are more, influenced by my own upbringing, all the work has a relevance to each, other, photographs from the exhibition and all the films included will be up on here with the blurb.

I am fortunate to be busy at the moment, I am showing work in Sand Bar, Fuel, The Art Corner, selling some in Afflecks hopefully, all pieces which are connected I like cafe culture, so wanted to do work which would suit these places, so have some drawings which I am showing in all these, sketches I do in pen, which are poetic illustrations of sorts, they all tie together the performance.

Evidence for all these exhibitions and other projects will be here, I am also working on the Logo and Flyers for my Friend Simon's night Grey Lantern, at Gullivers which is turning in to a thriveing new venue.
How ever today was supposed to be my dissertation day, all I did was work on some songs, email some networking oppurtunities, and watch all sorts of nonsence and good stuff some links In this post, I have a little eco streak sometimes, and the hippees eco home on Grand Designs was fancy.

A talent I behold is one of baking, I can bake amazing cakes, so whilst making cakes today, I listened to all sorts of Led Zeppelin.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW_WLxseq0o
I like the passion and raw power behind what they did, also that you can still hear the blues through it.
Bjork is one of people who I would like to be, a little odd, singing off key sometimes, it doesn't matter some of what she does is perfect, this is perfection for me

A group of ladies, who absolutely rescued what could have been a tramatic summer of heart Break were Mountain Man, they do the simple, D.I.Y folk, three ladies singing harmonies, really cut back, simplicity, you can hear the fragility and humour in what they do I love them, they have this one song which makes my whole body tremble in awe, I saw them at The Deaf Institute, and then at Green Man Festival, they ended up playing the smallest stage but, were incredible, so honest, just brilliant, this was a sound which underlined a moment in my life were I went, I really think everything is now new again, I will forget, all the heartbreak which will probably help write all the hit singles people love melodrama, and meloncholy Forget all that and just be enthralled by the beauty of simplicity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TIccEXZQ1s

Also in that weekend at Green Man in August I was part of this, 10000 people in joyful unison singing about death. The Flaming Lips really put on a show.

I WILL DO SOME OF THESE

Bernadette Mayer's List of Journal Ideas:
Journals of:
* dreams
* food
* finances
* writing ideas
* love
* ideas for architects
* city design ideas
* beautiful and/or ugly sights
* a history of one's own writing life, written daily
* reading/music/art, etc. encountered each day
* rooms
* elaborations on weather
* people one sees-description
* subway, bus, car or other trips (e.g., the same bus trip written about
every day)
* pleasures and/or pain
* life's everyday machinery: phones, stoves, computers, etc.
* answering machine messages
* round or rectangular things, other shapes
* color
* light
* daily changes, e.g., a journal of one's desk, table, etc.
* the body and its parts
* clocks/time-keeping
* tenant-landlord situations
* telephone calls (taped?)
* skies
* dangers
* mail
* sounds
* coincidences & connections
* times of solitude

Other journal ideas:
* Write once a day in minute detail about one thing
* Write every day at the same time, e.g. lunch poems, waking ideas, etc.
* Write minimally: one line or sentence per day
* Create a collaborative journal: musical notation and poetry; two writers
alternating days; two writing about the same subject each day, etc.
* Instead of using a book, write on paper and put it up on the wall (public
journal).
* and so on ..

I like the idea of putting a piece of paper on a wall and doing a public journal asking one question,
If the Journal we have to do everyday is so much part of our lives on our course,
maybe get the whole course involved in it.
So today I have been working on music for the band, shall put films and photos of rehearsing up soon
It will take a while, but I'm really happy with it. All interweaving parts for different instruments,
were sampling and looping, and meeting a drummer, and will be awesome I'm sure.
I have been working on films, writing all sorts, and you won't read all of it, as some of its personal,
but what I do is a to do list and try and stick to it, doing a new project each week,
which is connected to the last, then combining them together.
Edwyn is a Werewolf is a project were I find posters or images and change the text, to pretend that the Character
Portrayed is Edwyn or has been.

Wednesday 3 November 2010

Its early November.

We're all getting on with our dissertations, mine is on How our Multiple Personalities, influence our lives, and how art is an extension of the artist, it is based around, my character work, and looking in to artists who work in the same way, I wasn't very good with contextualising my work last year, that was my downfall, So looking at a variety of different artists who all work in Characters, is really helping me think about my research question, for all my work giving all my practical work a theoretical context.

So Artist who have influence my recent work, would be Film collage artists,
who I have always had an interest in like Christian Marclay, and Bill Viola, and a selection of different performers, recently Cindy Sherman, has been the go to gal.

My dissertation started to look at visions of the future, this puts things in to perspective.

The Mother of all Rube Goldberg Machines!

You’ve probably seen a Rube Goldberg machine in a science museum sometime, and watched with amusement while balls rolled down tracks or balloons inflated, triggering other mechanical events in a complicated chain reaction. But we guarantee you’ve never seen a Rube Goldberg machine quite like this.
When the rock band OK Go, justly famous for its treadmill dancing video, decided to make a new music video for its song “This Too Shall Pass,” the rockers tapped the artsy engineers at Syyn Labs to do something really special. The result was this 4-minute Rube Goldberg machine that plays part of the song, synchronizes with the beat, and involves the band members getting very messy. It runs the length of a two-story warehouse, and the action was filmed in a single shot. With no further ado, we give you: The mother of all Rube Goldberg machines.

I'm Rather Green

So this made me feel all warm and gooey.

POEM IMAGERY.

If I could make a video combining this cleverness, somehow, would be magical, really not sure how, I will commission these guys when I'm making the video for it, still recording it at the moment.

 SHADOW OF A GHOST

Approaching me in a distressed open way

Crying out on a new day

The cuckoo strangled when it awakes

Cycling a call at 4am

The Rhythm quickening pulsating on the verge of attack.

Shadows in Sunken Eyes of a Ghost

Sitting in Front of me Bewildering Escape Artists.

Drowning in Your Eyes bedazzling me,

My mind drifts rudely as the poet speaks eloquently soundtracking the event in metaphors of romance or of seizure.

Walking the line that breaks code

Punctuating every nuance

Reading every-line backwards as it educates your backwards mind.
